A group of car tires and wheels

Maintaining your tires is critical for keeping your Cadillac on the road. Fortunately, there are signs you need to visit your Cadillac dealer for new tires.

Shallow Tread Depth

Measure your tread depth to see if it is below safe levels. If it is less than 2/32 of an inch, replace your tires. You can perform a test with a penny from your pocket for a quick check. Insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head down. If you can see the top of his head, the tread is too shallow.

Visible Tread Wear Indicator Bars

Modern tires have tread wear indicators to warn you if your tread has worn down to an unsafe level. These are raised sections in the bottom of the tread grooves. When they become flush with the tire’s tread, replacement is necessary.

Old, Aging Tires

Rubber deteriorates over time, affecting the performance of your tires. Even if they look good as new, you should replace your tires after six years. If you don’t know how old your tires are, check the sidewall. The last four digits of the tire identification number represent the manufacture date: the first two indicate the week it was made, and the last two the year.

Damage to the Sidewall

Check for cracks in the sidewall of your tire. You should also inspect for cuts or gouges. Visible cracks, cuts, or gouges suggest the tire is developing leaks and damage that could lead to tire failure. Damage to the sidewall cannot be repaired, and the tire must be replaced instead.

Bulges or Blisters on the Tire

Look for any bulges or blisters protruding from the surface of your tire. Often caused by damage to the tire, they indicate weak spots that may fail and cause a sudden blowout. If you notice bumps or bulges on your tires, do not drive on them. Instead, replace them immediately.

Excessive Vibration

It is normal to feel some vibration from your vehicle while driving, especially on rough or bumpy roads. Excessive vibration that doesn’t seem to be due to road conditions can indicate tire problems, such as balance issues or internal damage. Too much vibration should prompt you to schedule a tire inspection.

Constant Loss of Pressure

If you find you need to inflate your tires on a regular basis, they probably have a leak. Leaky tires may be caused by age or damage. Have your tires inspected to see whether they can be repaired; otherwise, they will need to be replaced.
