Located in the middle of the Concho Valley in Western Texas, the city of San Angelo has a population of a little over 100,000 and is home to some historical sights, such as Fort Concho. Around the city, there are numerous beautiful destinations where you can go on exciting day trips with your group of friends or family.

1. Caverns of Sonora, TX

A little over an hour’s drive south of the city, the Caverns of Sonora are a popular touristic destination for visitors coming from all over the state. The place is considered one of the most fascinating caves in the entire country, with calcite crystal formations formed throughout the last 100 million years. The last remains of water were drained approximately two million years ago, leading to the formation of minerals in the area.

Although the cave has remained off-limits for most of its history, nowadays it is a popular tourist destination, and designated facilities have been built around it to cater to visitors. Although the entire length of the cave is approximately seven miles, only the first two are accessible via the walking trail. For those wanting to stay in the area for the night, there are numerous accommodation facilities in the nearby town of Sonora, located less than 20 miles east.

2. Fredericksburg, TX

Located a little over two hours away from Tom Green County, the small city of Fredericksburg is popular among visitors for its history as an ancient German colony. It boasts a charming historic downtown lined with cafés and small bistros. This town, known by locals as “Fritztown,” is home to an old German dialect spoken by the first settlers coming from Europe, who wanted to preserve their culture and language.

Once in the center of Fredericksburg, most touristic sights are within walking distance. Find a parking spot and start exploring with a stroll down Main Street. Some of the places you should not miss while in the area include the National Museum of the Pacific War, the Vereins Kirche Museum, and the Der Stadt Friedhof Cemetery on the eastern side of the city. After you are done exploring, make sure to check out one of the traditional German restaurants.

3. San Saba, TX

Known as “the pecan capital of the world,” the city of San Saba is a great day trip destination for those wanting a combination of a charming town and some beautiful natural surroundings. Begin exploring the area with a walk around the San Saba River Nature Park, then head to the Mill Pond and end your day with a delicious dinner at one of the small bistros and cafés in the downtown area.
